For this special workshop, the class will divide time (two days inside and two days outside) between the study of still life and Plein Air painting the surrounding coastal landscape of Balboa Island-one of California’s most charming coastal small towns. Each day will include several daily exercises and one demo.

Days 1-2:

The first day will focus on watercolor handling skills, mixtures and moisture, timing, as well as the building of form by defining light against shadow. These basic beginning and intermediate skills lend themselves to both still life and Plein Air painting. On the second day the Huse Skelly Gallery’s north facing windows will serve our still life set ups of fruit and flowers well with plenty of back lighting.

Days 3-4:

We will hold class outdoors bringing the same techniques of separating light and shadow, layering, and connecting shapes in Plein Air painting. April is a month of clouds and warmth and I expect my daily demonstrations will include skies, sun glare, atmosphere, and water reflections.
