Q: What's the first piece of art you ever made that you were truly proud of?
A: My piece “Take the Ocean Path” which won the award of excellence at my first LPAPA invitational. You put yourself out there creating what you feel is an exciting composition and not knowing if it will be seen. When I received that award it meant being recognized by those who share the same passion as I do.
Q: Do you have any rituals or habits that get you into a creative flow?
A: Setting up my easel is an OCD ritual for me. Everything has to be just so and I find that relaxes me. I created my own “gentlemen’s watercolor box” which I think of as my vehicle to creating.
Q: If you could have dinner with any artist (living or dead), who would it be and what would you ask them?
A: It would be Richard Diebenkorn and I’d ask him if he had a method to organizing his compositions or if it was totally intuitive.
Q: What's a book you think every creative person should read?
A: I love Thomas W. Schaller’s book “Architecture of Light”. He has such a calm and inspiring voice describing his own art process and thinking. It makes me feel that the art mountain in front of me is climbable by listening to your inner self.
Q: What's the piece you're most attached to and could never sell?
A: My piece “Color for Nothing” which was on the cover of Plein Air Magazine July 2024. I had no idea they were going to use it and I found out by someone telling me over the phone congratulations. I thought they were kidding me. Again, it felt like a recognition of my work by my art community that really makes this piece important to me.
